As a professional ' Wet Cleaning ' facility Avalon offers a revolutionary new cleaning alternative to “Dry Cleaning”. Using water, special biodegradable detergents and high-tech cleaning and finishing equipment, Avalon effectively cleans a full range of garments that are typically dry cleaned, leaving finished garments with unparalleled cleanliness and texture.

Professional ' Wet Cleaning ' is environmentally friendly because no hazardous chemicals are released into the air or water. Nearly all garments labeled “Dry Clean Only” can be successfully wet cleaned. The professionals at Avalon Custom Garment Care know the appropriate way to clean and finish a garment in ways that maintain proper shape and good-looking appearance.

Proponents of professional wet cleaning are working with the garment industry and Federal government bodies to change care labeling policy in order to help move away from the use of toxic chemicals and towards safer alternative practices. Professional ‘Wet Cleaning’ is the way of the future in professional garment care.

What's wrong with traditional dry cleaning?

Traditional dry cleaners clean fabrics using toxic chemicals that are hazardous to your health and the environment. The toxic chemical called perchloroethylene (commonly known as perc) is used by most professional Dry Cleaners across Canada and the US. Perc is linked to multiple types of cancer, reproductive disorders and infertility in both men and women, defect to the brain and nervous system and impaired functioning of liver and kidneys. Everyone who comes in contact with Perc is at risk. Perc can also contaminate the water supply when run-off from dry cleaning facilities flows into sewers or leaks into the groundwater. Perc use injures the environment and can also harm the health of dry cleaning workers, neighbours and customers.

What about Organic or Environmentally Friendly dry cleaning?

Dry cleaners that claim to be "Organic" or "Environmentally Friendly" aren't referring to "organic" in the sense of organically grown vegetables that you might find at a market. They're using "organic" in the sense that the toxic chemicals they use -- alcohols, ketones, aldehydes and so on -- are hydrocarbon based, which means that they are classified chemically as organic. All that means is that the chemicals have a carbon basis -- not that they are safe for the environment.

Until the city decides whether to phase out perc, says Monica Camp-bell, manager of the Environmental Protection Office, the public should consider wet cleaning as an option. “Its beneficial for consumers to be aware of wet cleaning and use them to encourage more dry cleaners to start using this (system),” she said.

Why some cleaners are misrepresenting themselves as organic cleaners?
